Single Pot Still Whisky is made from One 'Single' Distillery

Much like the Single Malt, the word ‘single’ in the name of the brew refers to the single distillery while Pot Still is the distillation mechanism behind the brew. Born in Ireland, Single Pot Still Whiskey is also popular as ‘Pure Pot Whiskey’, ‘Irish Style Pot Still Whiskey’ or ‘Pot Still Whiskey’.

Ingredients

Single Pot Still Whiskey is made from 'Malted' and 'Unmalted' Barley

Unlike in a Single Malt, Single Pot Still uses Malted and Unmalted Barley in a pot still distillation. It was originally made by brewers to evade taxes on malted barley.

The mash typically contains 30% each of Malted and Unmalted Barley in addition to 5% of Unmalted Cereals such as Rye or Oats. According to Irish brewing traditions, a Single Pot Still is distilled twice or thrice.

When British Taxes were imposed on Irish distillers in 1785, the Single Pot Still manufacturing was cut down to one distillery, the New Middleton Distillery. Before the taxes, Irish Style Pure Pot Still whiskey comprised of 80% of whiskey sales around the world. In fact, Single Pot Still spirit currently selling comes from the same Irish Pot Still Whiskey Manufacturer, Middleton.

Powers, Middleton, Method & Madness, Redbreast and Green Spot are the handful of survivors brewing the rich old Irish style of pot still whiskey currently in the world.
