Rex: “For me this is a deep rich dark fruit. After the heals of a smokey whiskey like Laphroaig come to this and it tastes like crème brûlée.”
Daniel: “You do get all the caramel and spice notes you think you would get from the Speyside regions they are pulling these from. It tastes like vanilla cream.”
Daniel: “A yes, that’s just a straight up classic bourbon, heavy on the wood notes, very much, almost syrup, mapley. Yeah, there’s nothing wrong with that. And the higher proof just kind of makes it a bit spikey and rich tasting”
Rex: “More vanilla apple notes on this then I remembered. Yeah, Four Roses is good stuff. Not really rounded of and smooth (aftertaste is a bit bitter) and there are little spikey notes in there. “
Daniel: “Smells like Highland Park, you get all that butterscotch mixed with musty smoked note. Like a smoked note that smells almost mossy.”
Rex: “(For the money), very nice.”
Daniel: “This one is just classic Irish. It’s not a pure pot still but you still has the butter biscuits notes, still has the round un-malted barley flavours. It’s friendly, nothing fancy, but for the money…”
Rex: “Velvety and round, buttery apple. That’s nice man. So, Jameson is very pleasant, very simple and it has some nice notes in there. Not challenging, it’s very friendly stuff.”
Daniel: “It’s just a classic bourbon, but it’s a bit more cherry then the last one (Four Roses) we did. ”
Rex: “Cherry and coming of the heals of Jameson, I’m getting just a little bit of walnut in there.”
Daniel: “There’s some mint in there, yes spearmint, not peppermint, or like an actual green mint leaf, like muddled up in the glass. (Of all the ones we’ve tried) I prefer this one. It’s not as bitey, it’s a little smoother This is super well rounded.”
Rex: “I’m getting less cherry. This feels really well balanced. It’s not just one or two notes , there are a few different things going on in here – which is nice.”
Daniel: “Now, I agree, for the money this is just a classic kick-ass, punch-you in-the-face Islay. It tastes like if you made out with a cigar smoking walrus. Brine and smoke, iodine and barrel-char. Oh man, so goooood. Yes! If you are into the peat world, I think this is actually one of the lighter peated whiskies, because behind the smoke it’s all bright and sparkly. Whereas others like Lagavulin and Bruichladdich that go for warm and dark notes. ”
Rex: “Someone described it as a mermaid’s bathwater. Not sweet, smooth, entry-level stuff. Most people 8 out of 10 don’t start here, kind of work you way up into the peaty stuff. But if you are the 2 out of 10, this could give you the kind of spanking you’re looking for.”
Daniel: “This is my recommendation. It’s a classic Speyside Highland whisky. It’s all caramel but without being boring. There is enough smoke and peat that it’s friendly. Ah, yeah, that’s wonderful. I would put this in the same category to Monkey Shoulder (but with not as much sugary candy). There is a bit more earth complexity to it. This is jut a wonderful, damn whisky.”
Rex: “Ooooh, man, coming of the Laphroaig that is… the vanilla.”
Rex: “My favourite whiskey for the money. I feel there is a lot going on in here.”
Daniel: “Holy crap, the butterscotch on this is almost Scotch like. Ah, so good. Vanilla, it’s piped tobacco. Ah, come on! Dam Michter’s.”
