Blended Whisky is made from 'Multiple' Distilleries
As the rule of thumb, any blend with more than 20% and up to 100% Whisky, is called a blended Whisky. You can mix any two Whiskies, preferably malt and grain to create a blend.
In a Blended Scotch Whisky, Malt and Grain Whiskies are fused. If a blended spirit contains more than half percent of the same Whisky, it is almost-always labelled after the same, such as in the case of Blended Bourbon.
Blended Whisky is made from a mix of Barley and Grains
Generally, distillers mix a premium malt or straight Whisky for the flavour with a cheaper base grain Whisky for creating the body. You can use straight, malt or grain Whisky to create blended brews.
Alcohol by Volume of Blended Whisky ranges from 40% to 80%. They are built on the palatable tastes of premium spirits to create a distinct character.
Blended Whisky Flavour Profile
With about 90% of world’s Whisky sales coming directly from Blended spirits, there are gazillion varieties of blends available today.
Popular flavours of Blended Whisky are Honey, Biscuit, Peat, Strawberry, Dried Fruit, Clove, Nut, Toffee, Spice, Nutmeg, Vanilla, Caramel, Peach and Floral. Blended spirits must be aged at least 3 years.
Blended Whisky Regions
History says blended spirits showed up around the same time Whisky was sold in shops such as that of the Chivas Brothers or Johnnie Walker. As shopkeepers topped their casks with random spirits based on availability, blends became popular.
Irish Blended Whiskey account for 90% of World’s Blended Whiskey sales. It combines pot, column, grain, and Whiskey. Scottish blends are available in three types, Blended Malt Whisky, Blended Grain Whisky and Blended Scotch Whisky while Canadian Blends combine wheat/ rye/ barley.
American Blends must contain 20% – 50% straight Whisky and Japanese Blended Whisky mixes Grain and Malt Whisky proportionately.
